Membership in Tough Times

Tara Institute has significant costs of operation, amounting to nearly $400,000 a year or more than $30,000 a month. One of the main pillars of our financial security is the support of members who provide nearly 20% of our income. Additionally this income does not entail other significant costs and is therefore fully available to support the Centre’s day to day running.

In 2008 our membership income was around $63,000, covering our total costs for approximately two months of the year. However we are currently experiencing a reduction in the number of members. For instance, we currently have about 177 members compared with 200 a year ago. If this trend continues in 2010, it will reduce our income from members by at least $10,000 and will put financial pressure on the centre at a time when costs are increasing. For any members who have recently allowed their membership to lapse or others who are not members, I would like to urge you to reconsider the great benefits which TI provide to everyone who attends and whether it is possible for you to join in one of our membership categories.

Additionally you will receive many benefits directly, including discounts at courses, use of the members’ library, our newsletter, discounts in the bookshop, and voting rights at centre meetings.

Dharma Quote

Why is it so important to know the nature of our own mind? Since we all want happiness, enjoyment, peace and satisfaction and these things do not come from ice-cream but from wisdom and the mind, we have to understand what our mind is and how it works.
